Winter Storms Claim 5 Victims in the Gaza Strip Amidst Desperate Conditions in Makeshift Shelters.
Strong cold-season winds caused walls to collapse upon fragile shelters housing people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, killing no fewer than four individuals. These deaths highlights the perilous situation that persist after over two years of intense airstrikes and severe shortages of aid.
Truce Offers No Relief from Severe Elements
Although a ceasefire has been in effect since October, aid groups state that Palestinians do not have the adequate shelter required to survive recurring winter storms.
Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, reported on Tuesday that the deceased were two women, a girl, and a man.
Separately, the Gaza health ministry stated on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy succumbed of hypothermia during the night.
"The world has enabled us to witness death in every possible way," said a family member following the funeral. "While it is correct the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."
Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse
As per the medical center, three members of a single household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre high wall fell onto their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 others were injured in the event.
Family members on that day began clearing the debris that had buried their loved ones and rebuilding the tent shelters for those who remained.
Humanitarian Efforts and Continuing Crisis
United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothes as well as food and hygiene items across Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

"Although 'bombings and shootings have slowed' during the truce, they have not stopped," Elder informed reporters at a press conference in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the international community now calls quiet would be considered a crisis in any other place," he said.
Third Cold Season of Struggle
Gaza’s residents of over 2 million people has been struggling to fend off the freezing temperatures and bad weather away while facing lack of assistance and a absence of sturdier temporary housing, which is badly needed throughout the colder season. This marks the third winter after the war involving Israel and the group began on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and murdered approximately 1,200 individuals and abducted 251 others into Gaza.
