The Former French President Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Documenting Three Weeks In Custody

The ex-president of France plans a memoir next month called Diary of a Prisoner, which recounts his experience spent in custody.

The announcement emerged shortly after the ex-leader was released while he contests the court ruling for illegal collaboration connected to efforts to obtain election campaign funds from the government of Muammar Gaddafi.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he reflects in a preview, suggesting the account will focus on his reflections during seclusion instead of extensive analysis regarding the overcrowded and crisis-hit jail system in France.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing in that facility, where one hears constant sound,” he continues. “The racket unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, he participated remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this difficult experience tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship that has been imposed on me. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It has an impact all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, became the inaugural ex-leader in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure in the French Republic to serve time in prison.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he would use his time to write a book.

Cell Library

It is not certain did he manage to review and analyze the texts he took into prison: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, where an innocent man is imprisoned then breaks out to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

Sarkozy was held in isolation to protect him in a space approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison in the city. Two bodyguards occupied an adjacent room.

It was stated that he consumed solely dairy snacks in prison worried that prison cuisine may have been contaminated. He had facilities to cook for himself yet he declined, according to reports. It is uncertain if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.

Lawyer’s Statements

The legal representative, who saw him regularly every day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings he would be safer released rather than in custody. “There were death threats, has heard screaming after dark plus rapid actions next door as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

Sarkozy went to prison in late October following a Paris court gave him five years in prison on conspiracy charges related to a plan to secure campaign funds for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and has appealed against the verdict, and another court case set for next spring.
