The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the popular program reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
One could easily to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the writers are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
