Preparations for Trump-Putin Meeting Shelved Shortly Following Budapest Talks Announced

There are "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

Recently the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest within two weeks to address the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".

The administration did not share further information on why the talks had been put on hold.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources claimed his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting Trump had urged him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Russia.

Yet, on Monday the American president embraced a peace initiative endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the war on the current front line.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president said conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he remarked.
