Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
