Mikel Arteta Acknowledges Long-Term Tenure Hinges on Lifting Trophies.
As he approaches his six-year milestone as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to achieving success.
The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era
Arteta was appointed on the 20th of December in 2019 and promptly led the team to an cup win not long after. However, that first major trophy remains his lone major honor since succeeding Unai Emery.
“Absolutely,” the manager said in response to a query about remaining in charge after his current deal. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the near future as well to warrant that continuation.”
This weekend sees the landmark with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal met the day after his appointment was announced.
League Position and Pressure
As trailing Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League for the first time. This comes despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured over 100 injuries over the course of last season.
Arteta currently has 18 months to run on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that success is required in the immediate future.
The Manager's Mandate
Arteta elaborated, stressing the daily requirement to justify his role. “In my view a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you address the media, how you step into the dressing room, the signal you send.”
He stated further, commending the strong backing from the board and owners, but pinpointing the players' commitment as the key factor. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”
Latest Fitness Blow
The team faces the weekend fixture dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is likely to sideline him for several weeks.
Evolved Priorities
Even with the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he began his reign.
He pointed to the squad's displays as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”
He finished by saying, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our aim is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
