Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD released video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
