Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
