American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

More than three thousand US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be delayed due to a lack of employees - among the peak after the closure began.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest shutdown in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when asked if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The FAA alert was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were back on schedule by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were postponed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the US, could encounter problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The FAA warned travelers in the state to check with airlines about updated departure times.

The situation precedes the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak periods to fly in the US.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including pilot training.
