Gus Atkinson further complicated the fitness woes of the England squad after leaving the playing area early on day two in the Melbourne Test against Australia.

The pace bowler felt a problem in his hamstring post-delivery of the fourth over on Saturday.

Team management indicated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and would spend time off the field for further assessment "over the next few hours".

The series decider of the series at the SCG begins this coming Sunday.

The English side has been without fast bowlers Mark Wood due to knee trouble and another paceman with an abdominal strain on the current trip.

A replacement bowler was called up as injury reinforcement.

The seamer had a tough time during the first two matches, claiming a mere three wickets.

He was dropped from the previous Test, before being recalled for the Melbourne Test as Archer's replacement.

Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, taking two wickets during the host's first knock, then making 28 with the bat as one of just three teammates to get into double digits.

Post a single over at the end of day one, he returned on Saturday morning and removed Scott Boland Scott Boland caught behind.

However, towards the conclusion of that over, he bowled a variation to Travis Head and immediately felt his left hamstring.

The English bowler was recalled for the Melbourne match following his omission the previous Test.
