The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
