The 2026 cars are set to be lighter, more agile and sustainable relative to present-day cars.

The world of Formula 1 has introduced the official language that will be used to explain the technical complexities of its new 2026 technical rules.

The sport is embarking on what is considered the biggest rules overhaul in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a substantially higher energy storage, driving significant developments in the cars' aerodynamics.

Over a race distance, drivers will carefully oversee ERS energy – potentially on hot laps – to achieve the peak lap time.

Broad surveys were undertaken with a wide range of fans, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to understand which phrases would aid comprehension of the central aspects of the new regulations.

The primary aim was to present a set of intricate features of the racing as accessible as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, initial designations for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the moveable wings – have been abandoned in preference for intuitive labels that clearly indicate the actual function of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that racers will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding battery management, energy recovery, and conservation.

The 2026 rules introduce a set of functions that will be shown on broadcast screens to enhance the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power available when a driver is less than a second the car ahead to assist with an overtake.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a driver-operated battery discharge from the hybrid system that can be deployed for attack or defence. It delivers the driver maximum power at the activation of a control.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be used with calculation, as the available electrical charge is strictly limited.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the car's wings adjust their angles – spreading on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and higher speed, and sealing in the corners for maximum downforce.
  • Battery Recharge: Drivers can recharge the energy store with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only limited engine output is applied.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The next-generation machines will be more compact and lighter than this year, with a wheelbase shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although teams will inevitably claw this back as they develop their cars.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The cars will feature active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will open on the straight sections to reduce drag and enhance velocity and click back into place for peak handling.

Tyres will keep 18-inch rims, but the actual tyres will be slimmer, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The new power units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the petrol engine and the battery and motor, up from about one-fifth electric power under present rules.

The ERS setup is simplified through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey component that harvested power from the exhaust turbo.

All vehicles will be required to run on fully sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or lab-created processes.
