Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at Age 89.

This award-nominated actress the celebrated Diane Ladd has died 89 years old.

The actress, with filmography featured Chinatown, left this world in her residence in Ojai, California. The news was shared through a message by her offspring, Academy Award-winning star her daughter Laura Dern.

Her daughter, who appeared with her mom in various films like Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my incredible hero plus my special gift of a mother”, stating that she was at her bedside when she passed.

“She was an exceptional grandmother, mother, daughter, performer, creative and empathetic spirit that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were lucky to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Early Career and Major Success

Her initial acting years saw small roles in TV shows like The Fugitive whereas the seventies saw her starring next to Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

During that year, the year 1974, she performed alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese celebrated film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role landed Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.

Subsequent Years

Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in crime thriller the movie Black Widow and funny follow-up National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation while also joining the show Alice, a sitcom inspired by the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

During the next ten years, she was given another Oscar nomination for supporting actress nomination for her performance in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart, a cult classic in which she portrayed the parent of her actual daughter Dern’s character. The following year she was awarded a further nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose, another movie which included her daughter.

“This was the film that the late Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she flew us to the UK for a premiere and a party in our honor,” Ladd said regarding Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, grasping our hands, and crying, viewing our performance.”

The nineties included parts in the comedy Cemetery Club, a film joining her again with Ellen Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a political comedy, featuring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she acted as Laura Dern’s mom another time. Those years also earned her nominations for Emmy Awards for performances on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Collaborations with Daughter

She kept appearing with her daughter in comedy drama Daddy and Them, a movie, Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White dark comedy series the program Enlightened. She happened to be the third cousin of playwright Tennessee Williams, whom she described as “a significant impact in my life”.

Back in 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with lung disease and advised she had just six months to live but she regained full health when her daughter transferred her to a new hospital.

“If you can take your pain and avoid letting it accumulate like an injury, instead apply it to discover, to clarify the journey for yourself and others, then you are succeeding,” Ladd said.
